Chapter Twenty-one
When Lyons got to the Garda station in Mill Street, she wasted no time in getting down to business. She summoned Sally Fahy and Eamon Flynn into her office.
âRight, folks, I want to go over everything we know about this case and see if we can progress matters. Thereâs quite a bit of new information that has come to light. Why donât you both grab a coffee, and get me one too, and weâll make a start.â
Eamon Flynn left the room to see to their drinks.
âItâs good to have you back, boss. We were a bit all at sea here without you,â Fahy said.
âThanks, Sally. Itâs good to know Iâm indispensable. But Superintendent Hays had my back in any case. I donât think I was in any real danger of being booted out.â
âSo, whatâs the story on yer man in Clifden then?â
âHang on till Eamon gets back and then all will be revealed,â Lyons said.
A few moments later, Eamon Flynn reappeared with three mugs of hot coffee and set two of them down in front of Fahy and Lyons.
âThanks, Eamon. OK, well this is what we know. Adam Dunne, cleverly disguised as some sort of dealer, was actually working for MI5, the British security outfit. Weâll know more soon. Thereâs someone from there coming over to talk to Mick. But we can assume that Dunne had infiltrated some sort of international smuggling ring, and I guess someone must have discovered who he really was, and taken him out. Vincent Henderson is somehow involved too, but to what extent we donât know; for now at least,â Lyons said.
âYes, but what about the diamonds we found in Dunneâs car? Do you think he was skimming as well? It looks a bit like that,â Flynn said.
âPossibly,â Lyons said. âOr maybe they were just the proceeds of some deal or other and he was keeping them as evidence.â
âWhat about Dunneâs mobile phone?â Fahy asked.
âCripes, Iâd forgotten about that, and with Sinéad out of action as well, I donât suppose anything has happened. Sally, can you give her a call when weâre finished here and letâs get moving on it,â Lyons said.
âYes, sure, boss. But I think itâs fair to assume that the gang will probably go to ground for a while now after this. Theyâll be in damage limitation mode for a while, so itâs going to be very hard to flush them out,â Fahy said.
âYou could be right, Sally. But we still have one string to our bow,â Lyons said.
âWhatâs that?â
âHenderson. He doesnât know Iâm a cop. He chatted Sinéad and me up in the bar of the Alcock and Brown, but he didnât get a look at us later when we were out at the coastguard station, at least I donât think so. Maybe we could use that to our advantage.â
âHm... sounds a bit dodgy, boss. What have you in mind?â Fahy said.
âNothing yet. But heâs our only solid lead, and he definitely has something to hide.â
âWhy donât we do a
